Costume designer David Roberts chose to make the elderly Joe Louis, seated in a wheelchair, the only character appearing in color. Roberts used shades of grey for the supporting cast's vintage costumes, representing Louis's memories of that time. To provide further contrast and visual depth, images representing Louis's memories will be projected onto the other characters onstage.
