To "step in the ring" and work with living composers to create new operatic roles is an opportunity given to very few young singers. The principal cast members of Shadowboxer have relished the chance to work with composer Frank Proto and librettist John Chenault to craft their roles. In addition, cast members watched a sparring match and trained in select boxing techniques with the University of Maryland Terps Boxing Club, then probed even deeper into developing and shaping their roles through a course of study developed by Director Leon Major involving films on boxing and combat classes.

"The idea that a composer was writing a piece of music that I was going to be the first person
to perform was a tremendous honor – and a tremendous responsibility. The great thing about
this music is once you've put in the work you can take it and make it your own."

Adrienne Webster, "Marva Trotter"
